Thin liquid films: Where hydrodynamics, capillarity, surface stresses and intermolecular forces meet

چکیده

Thin liquid films arise in many technological applications and biological phenomena. They also present a fascinating object of study, because rich interplay between capillarity, hydrodynamics, interfacial transport phenomena rheology, as well the effects interaction forces when thin down to molecular thicknesses. Recent advances experimental techniques have given further insights variety physical phenomena, which can occur. These are briefly reviewed. How these be utilised is illustrated by recent studies addressing effect rheological stresses on drainage, capillarity hydrodynamics during film retraction, solutocapillary stabilisation films. Finally, we discuss challenges conducting drainage measurements at high varied capillary numbers how could overcome combined use experiments simulations.

Non - equilibrium Surface Forces and Hydrodynamics of Thin Films *

The notion of »non-equilibrium surface forces« is advanced for the application in a number of cases of colloid stability and transport phenomena. The idealized concept of full equilibrium in the double layer, as used in the DLVO theory is shown to be too simple to describe the stability of a colloid particle not in equilibrium with the surround ing medium. Cases are described where surface forc...

Unsteady spreading of thin liquid films with small surface tension

The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to solve for the free surface of a thin liquid drop draining down a vertical wall under gravity. The analysis is based on the smallness of the surface tension term in the lubrication equation. In a region local to the front of the drop, where the surface curvature is large, surface tension forces are significant. Everywhere else, the surface c...

Visualization of Surface Acoustic Waves in Thin Liquid Films.

We demonstrate that the propagation path of a surface acoustic wave (SAW), excited with an interdigitated transducer (IDT), can be visualized using a thin liquid film dispensed onto a lithium niobate (LiNbO3) substrate. The practical advantages of this visualization method are its rapid and simple implementation, with many potential applications including in characterising acoustic pumping with...

Multi-curvature liquid meniscus in a nanochannel: evidence of interplay between intermolecular and surface forces.

We examined the formation of a multiply curved meniscus inside rectangular nanochannels, whose width ranges from 50 to 800 nm at a constant height of 200 nm. When the channel width is smaller than approximately 400 nm under partial wetting conditions, a distinct multi-curvature meniscus was observed at the advancing front with an edge disjoined from the wall. In contrast, a typical pre-wetting ...
